Symposium Framework

The symposium framework will include presentation of papers and workshop opportunities, special interest discussions and the opportunity to view and visit the arts in action.

The 2008 Symposium is organised around three key perspectives:

Each perspective will be driven by a single key question and addressed by a keynote speaker at the commencement of each day of the Symposium.

Special Interest Groups

As the RiSE Program has been developed around three key strands - Philosophy, Program/Implementation and Leadership/Strategy, all Symposium participants will be asked to select an appropriate Special Interest Group, one which reflects their professional practice and/or interest.

Special Interest Groups will include:

During the timetabled SIG sessions Symposium participants will, within the designated strand, respond to the relevant key questions:

Philosophy: What is the nexus between The Arts, Arts Therapy and Special Education?
Program/Implementation: How can teachers develop skills and understandings to use The Arts and Arts Therapy to address the needs of children in Special Education?
Leadership/Strategy: How can we shift understanding at a community and/or policy level to advocate for the importance of The Arts and Arts Therapy in Special Education?

Participants will, through the lens of the strand question, utilise their expertise and experience to explore and develop recommendations for Re-Imagining Special Education through the Arts and Arts Therapy.

SIGS sessions have been timetabled throughout the Symposium. These sessions will provide Symposium participants with an added opportunity to learn, grow, share, challenge, extend and reflect on their knowledge and understanding of the place of The Arts and Arts Therapy in Special Education.

At the conclusion of the symposium SIGS findings and recommendations will be posted on the RiSE website. They will also provide the foundation for further professional learning opportunities, program development and implementation strategies in this vital area of Special Education.
